Victory Over Japan Day

Victory Over Japan Day
Victory in Europe Day, also known as VE Day, was celebrated on May 8th of 1945. In both Great Britain and the United States, it was announced that the German troops had surrendered during World War II. Three months later, on August 14th 1945, President Truman announced the great news that Japan had unconditionally surrendered to the Allies, which officially ended World War II. This famous day in our country’s history had been known as Victory over Japan Day, and more commonly known as VJ Day. Japan’s official surrender took place on September 2, 1945 aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, which at the time was anchored in Tokyo Bay. General of the Army, Douglas MacArthur, signed the document ending the six years of hostility that lingered between the countries.

During his press conference on August 14th 1945, President Truman stated that "This is the day we have been waiting for since Pearl Harbor. This is the day when Fascism finally dies, as we always knew it would." American citizens were elated. The war was over. Streets of cities all over the country were filled with crowds of people rejoicing and celebrating. The American flag was proudly waved that day.
